Reflections
To move forward,
to have progress,
to gain confidence,
make your mountain
into
a series of molehills.
Stop doing it the other way around.
When your expectations for
life,
work,
relationships
don’t match your reality,
you will experience disruption.
When your rules for
“how it’s supposed to be”
aren’t being met,
you will be frustrated.
Most people simply stay stuck
in this disruption frustration,
telling themselves this is
“just how it is.”
But it isn’t.
You always have a choice:
change your rules,
your expectations,
or work to change your reality.
But only if you would rather not be stuck.
Planning
the work you want to do,
the art you want to create,
the impact you want to have
can be overwhelming.
You can see a glorious future
high on the mountaintop,
but the path from here to there
is covered in darkness and fog.
The immensity
of your life project,
the tasks you need to complete,
the uncertainty of success
can cause you
to get stuck
in your own mind.
Doubts and fears
creep in,
telling you
the journey is too dangerous,
that you’re not ready,
that you’ll never be ready.
Now is the time to remember,
when hero’s journey begins
she doesn’t know
how it will go.
She only knows the desired outcome.
And the way every
hero embarks
is to simply take
the
first
step.
If you seek advice from nobody,
you may get nowhere.
If you seek advice from everybody,
then you become like everybody else.
When you seek advice from somebody
carefully chosen,
artfully applied,
you begin to become someone
whom others seek.
If you get
mad,
sad,
anxious,
frustrated
when something unexpected happens,
it is more than likely
you feel that way
every time.
Most people think that
how they feel day to day,
how they respond to change
is out of their control.
But that’s not true.
It’s what you have gotten used to.
Your emotions are a habit.
And like any habit,
your emotional responses can be changed.
You begin by deciding that feeling
mad,
sad,
anxious,
frustrated
is what you used to
do.
When you finally let go
of “I wish I would have”,
of “will it all work out?”,
of the expectations unspoken,
you will find yourself
here
and
now.
And then you realize
here and now
is all you ever needed.
We understand the potential danger of
toys on the stairs,
shoes left in the walkway,
unattended clutter that seems to multiply,
but we wait until someone gets hurt
or we are having guests
to clean it up.
The clutter in our minds,
the negative self-talk,
the fears keeping us from taking action
have as much potential for adversely affecting
our lives as the toy on the stair.
And we often talk about
clearing our heads by taking
a walk,
a deep breath,
or
a break,
but
we wait until
we are
overwhelmed,
frustrated,
or
angry
to actually do it.
Imagine what your days would be like
if you began by
cleaning your mind,
clearing the path for
progress,
possibility,
and realizing potential.
Imagine what you could do
if the clutter in your mind
wasn’t troubling you.
Left unattended, it multiplies.
There are moments
when cleaning out your desk
is the most worthwhile thing
you could do.
“Past performance does not predict future results.”
This is mandatory verbiage for investments,
but we completely disregard it.
The core of our being wants to believe
the past predicts the future.
We believe this to be true with
money
as well as
Life.
“I’ve screwed it up before. I’ll just do it again.”
While it is true we humans tend to repeat our mistakes,
it is not fate.
The legacy,
the destiny
you seek
is not based in what you did
Yesterday.
it. starts. today.
and it continues
Every. Single. Day.
To be living the life of our dreams,
we’re told to
make the biggest splash,
the loudest noise,
get a presence on social media that says,
“Hey, look at my shiny toys.”
The supposed gurus and glamour girls,
with their Ferrari’s and perfect curls,
are about as
real
as
reality t.v.
and this is what we want our life to be?
There is nothing wrong with fancy cars
and beautiful hair,
it’s just hard to tell what’s true
when at a smartphone screen we stare.
What if, instead of following the sprayed on sheen,
today you chose to make the tiniest ripple,
to do the good, hard work of connecting?
And every day, what if you connected some more,
developing trust and a small devoted core?
For our eyes may crave the trappings and toys,
but our hearts know,
life is not found
in making the most noise.
