OXYGEN MASK

Carefully, I stretched the

elastic ear bands,

adjusted them

so the oxygen would

flow.

Over and over, I did this.

Being kind.

Being generous

Caring for others.

So I thought.

Later, while cursing a

dish for breaking,

I realized why

flight attendants tell you

“put your own oxygen mask on first".

ENERGY

What if

instead of

attacking in anger,

surrendering to sadness,

daydreaming in despair,

this emotional energy

led to

cultivating curiosity,

making meaning,

expanding understanding?

“Pipedream”, you say.

“Wishful thinking”, you smirk.

“Whistling in the dark”, you belittle.

Maybe.

But with the

energy expended to

diss, dismiss, destroy,

what good

might you have

created?

And which

energy use

brings life?

(It’s all energy.

How we use it is a choice.)
