THE TRUTH

We think the truth is

hard,

jagged,

cutting.

Is it because experience,

and popular opinion,

and our own neurosis

has taught us that

truth only hurts?

We are told to

face the truth,

and when said to us this way,

we would rather

run away.

Truth can hurt.

Facing the reality of the stories we tell ourselves.

Facing the ways we sabotage and demean others.

Yet, there is truth

when someone says,

“It’s good to see you”,

“Good work today”,

“I like your jacket”.

We just choose not to hear it as such.

We are more ready to accept

(what we interpret as)

a negative truth,

rather than a word of

welcome,

affirmation,

even love.

The way we interpret truth

doesn’t have anything to do with what truth is,

it has everything to do with who we are.
