THE PERSON ACROSS FROM YOU

The person across from you

woke up this morning,

and wished they hadn’t.

The crushing weight they feel,

just won’t move off their chest.

Using every ounce of willpower,

they got up.

Moving to the closet,

they put on an “I’m fine” suit

and got on with the day.

They are hoping no one notices the suit’s thin veneer

covering their sadness, their lost hope, their desperation,

and,

at the same time,

they’re praying someone will.

Now, they’re across from you.

(For all of those in the “I’m fine” suit:

You are not alone.

I can help.)
