WE BUILD THESE WALLS

With an intention of protection,

we build these walls.

After hurt,

pain,

shame,

we lay another brick.

In the beginning,

the wall serves a good purpose,

keeps us safe.

Later, we realize

what we constructed to protect us

now holds us,

confines us,

imprisons us.

What we have built,

must be undone.

So we say

“Thank you for your protection;

Thanks for keeping me safe;

It’s time you served a different purpose.”

Then, we begin removing bricks

to open a door

to freedom,

to love,

to abundant, unrestricted life.

The walls we built

become the entryway

to a new tomorrow.
