As the end of a year,
the end of a relationship,
the end of a life,
we look back
on mistakes made,
and lessons learned.
Some dwell on the mistakes,
assign blame and take on shame.
They worry it’s too late to change.
Some focus on the battles they’ve won
and look forward -- more to come --
forgetting the damage they’ve done.
Between the missteps and the battle scars
is a place to acknowledge and accept
where we have come from,
and where we are.
We leave behind the blame and shame,
and take responsibility for the pain.
And in the place of in-between,
If we are present,
the future can be seen.
