On the playground,

chosen captains

pointed to the next desired

mate for the team.

They didn’t have to point at me,

I was the last one standing.  


Chosen by the lack of other choices.


For years, I waited for others

to name me, to point at me,

and kept waiting.  


Then I made a decision

to form my own team and

fill my roster.


I was the first selection.


In wanting so badly to be on someone else’s team,

I forgot I needed to choose myself.
